  38. JIV is a picture viewer. I can imagine that you're wondering
  39. now why I had to write yet another one... well, here's a list
  40. of features that should answer your question:

  42.  ╖ JIV supports many different file formats:
  43.  
  44.    - GIF (full GIF87a standard plus a subset of GIF89a).
  45.  
  46.    - BMP (MS-Windows and OS/2 variants, currently only
  47.      uncompressed).
  48.  
  49.    - IFF-ILBM (including HAM6, HAM8, EHB and 24bit formats).
  50.  
  51.    - PNM pictures (PBM, PGM and PPM in both binary and
  52.      ASCII format).
  53.  
  54.    - PCX (8bit/VGA, 24 bit, monochrome and _some_ 4 bit)
  55.  
  56.    - JPEG/JFIF, if the JPEG CODEC is installed.

  58.  ╖ JIV supports several types of display hardware:
  59.  
  60.    - all native graphics chipsets (OCS, ECS and AGA).
  61.  
  62.    - Cybergraphics emulation

  64.    - A2024.

  66.    - Picasso-II/Village emulation

  68.    - Generic mode, should work with every graphics board that
  69.      emulates Workbench/Intuition. Tested with the Picasso-II
  70.      emulation and the Cybergraphics emulation.

  72.  ╖ JIV supports displaying over-sized images using autoscroll.

  74.  ╖ JIV supports multiple filenames and AmigaDOS pattern
  75.    matching.

  77.  ╖ JIV can dither pictures that use more colors than your
  78.    display hardware supports.

  80.  ╖ JIV offers an endless/slideshow mode that can be used for
  81.    (non-interactive) advertising, for example in a shop window.

  83. Please note that JIV is probably not the best choice for
  84. "small" Amiga configurations. It will need a lot of memory and
  85. (in some cases) quite a bit of computing power as well.

  87. The minimum configuration for JIV is:
  88.  
  89.  ╖ 68000 or better.
  90.  
  91.  ╖ AmigaOS 2.04 (V37) or better.
  92.  
  93.  ╖ 1 MByte or more of RAM.
  94.  
  95. This configuration should allow you to view small to medium-sized
  96. pictures (640x480x8 should just be possible).

  98. The suggested configuration for JIV is:

  100.  ╖ 68030 or better.

  102.  ╖ AmigaOS 3.1 (V40) or better.
  103.  
  104.  ╖ 4 MBytes of RAM or more.

  106.  ╖ Hard disk drive.

  108. This configuration will allow you to view most pictures you're
  109. likely to find. A bit more RAM wouldn't hurt, though. :-) And
  110. of course you'll need a graphics board if you want to display
  111. true-color pictures without dithering.

  115. Distribution License
  116.  
  117. This version of JIV may be distributed freely for
  118. non-commercial purposes only. You must distribute the entire
  119. archive INTACT and UNCHANGED, that is, you are NOT allowed
  120. to add files to the archive or remove files from the archive
  121. or change files in the archive.

  123. Specifically, you're allowed to:
  124.  
  125.  ╖ Distribute JIV on floppy-disk-based collections of
  126.    PD software.
  127.  
  128.  ╖ Distribute JIV on CDROM-based collections of PD software IN
  129.    ARCHIVED FORM ONLY, unless you obtain a specific license
  130.    from the author.

  132.  ╖ Distribute JIV electronically, for example through email or
  133.    FTP, or through BBS systems.

  135.    BBS sysops, do NOT add those pesky BBS advertisments to the
  136.    archive!

  140.  ╖ Distribute parts of the archive or changed/patched versions

  154. I have been informed that exporting this program to the USA
  155. may violate USA law because of a patent that has been granted
  156. for the LZW compression algorithm used in the GIF file format.
  157. (I have also been informed that software patents are invalid
  158. under German law). Therefore I will not directly export JIV
  159. to the USA, and I will not ask for any shareware fees from USA
  160. users of JIV (until the situation has become more transparent).

  163. Please do not confuse this distribution license, which details
  164. the terms and conditions for DISTRIBUTING JIV, with the
  165. shareware license which details the terms and conditions for
  166. USING JIV.

  197. Known problems:
  198.  
  199.  ╖ If you're using an A4000/040 kickstart file on a computer
  200.    with a CPU <= 68020, the DISPLAY=GENERIC may crash your
  201.    machine. This is not a bug in JIV. The BestModeIDA() system
  202.    call in the A4000 kickfile seems to contain an instruction
  203.    that is only available on 68030 and above.
  204.  
  205.    There are only two kinds of people who use A4000 kickstart
  206.    files on CPUs below 68030: former registered developers
  207.    and software pirates.
  208.  
  209.  ╖ The "DISPLAY=GENERIC" mode will be very slow if you're
  210.    using older versions of AmigaOS (before 3.0/V39). JIV uses
  211.    WritePixelLine8() in GENERIC mode; WritePixelLine8() is
  212.    much faster in AmigaOS 3.0 (V39) and later than in the
  213.    older versions. If you're still using such an old Kickstart
  214.    version, you might want to use "DISPLAY=NATIVE".
